Golden Hour Malham Photo Walk

There’s something magical about Malham in the soft light of a summer evening. This walk takes in some of the area’s most iconic spots—Janet’s Foss, the dramatic walls of Gordale Scar, and the sculpted limestone pavement above Malham Cove—just as the crowds fade and the golden hour begins. The shifting light adds atmosphere and depth, turning familiar landmarks into fresh photographic opportunities.

We’ll focus on techniques for working with low, warm light—exposure choices, composition, and creative use of light—helping you make the most of this special time of day. Whether you’re drawn to wide landscapes or the smaller details that catch the evening glow, this walk offers a chance to slow down and capture Malham at its most photogenic.

Hidden Landscapes of Malham

Beyond the famous postcard views, Malham hides a wealth of quieter corners and overlooked details waiting to be discovered. On this walk, we’ll leave the busiest paths behind and explore those tucked-away places that reveal a different side to the landscape. Uncovering subjects and scapes that often go unseen.

I’ll share ideas on how to spot and frame these hidden gems, with tips tailored to your experience and aspirations —whether you’re chasing abstract textures, intimate scenes, or alternative takes on the landscape. This walk is all about slowing down, seeing differently, and finding beauty where others might simply walk past.

Golden Hour Norber Erratics Photo Walk

Skill Level: Beginners to Advanced
Location: Clapham
Terrain: Rough rocky, slippery paths with sharp inclines, 4 miles approx
Additional: Parking fees apply

Beginning in the picturesque village of Clapham, we’ll make our way up through classic Dales scenery to one of the most extraordinary landscapes in the country—the Norber Erratics. These huge boulders, carried and dropped by glaciers thousands of years ago, sit scattered across the limestone slopes in dramatic, almost otherworldly fashion. It’s a place where geology and scenery combine to create something truly unique.

Our walk is timed for the golden hour, when early autumn evening light casts long shadows, enriches the colours of the moorland, and highlights the scale and strangeness of the Erratics. Along the way I’ll share practical tips on composition, exposure, and making the most of the changing light, with advice tailored to your own experience and goals.

With incredible views stretching across the Dales and the Erratics themselves providing endless creative possibilities, this is a chance to capture a location that feels like nowhere else.
