Autumn: Shoot, Edit, Print

Location: The Studio, 95 Main st, Burley in Wharfedale LS29 7BU & Leeds Area
Date: Wednesday 30th Ocotber 2024, 2pm - 9.30pm
Terrain: Well-pathed relatively easy walking with some potentially muddy paths & hills.

Starting at Harewood Village we'll explore the ancient trees, sweeping vistas and wildlife where red kites dance in the air and the red deer will be gearing up for the rut! We'll shoot up until the sun sets over lower wharfedale. 

During the shoot, with a small group (3 max), I’ll share my top photography tips and advice based on your own experience and equipment, ensuring you get some high-quality, creative photos suitable to make a subsequent fine art print. 

Following the afternoon's shoot we’ll head back to the studio via a fish and chip shop included in the ticket price (alternatives available on request). 

Having refueled, we’ll get stuck into selecting, editing and printing a favourite shot from the shoot.   

I'll be sharing the tips and tricks I've learned from nearly 20 years of digital editing experience to help you get the best from your own shots, including specialist techniques.

We'll finish the workshop by creating an A3 print of your favourite photo using a professional-grade printer on thick, fine-art cotton paper giving your photo a professional quality finish.

A Macbook Pro with Adobe Software installed is available for hire on this workshop.

What if it's rainy or cloudy?

Like many of the best outdoor photographers, I believe that great photos can be achieved in all weather and light conditions. As long as it is safe to do so we will continue to explore the stunning photo opportunities in the area. The great thing about our location is that it looks fresh and stunning in all weather! And taking photos in all elements is a great way to improve your creative and photography skills.

Whatever the weather on the day, I can promise an insightful and rewarding walk that will help you develop your skills and have a great time doing it. 

Goit Stock Photo Walk

Location: Goit Stock, Harden Ln, Wilsden, BD16 1BG

Terrain: Mostly good, uneven and muddy paths with patches of tricky terrain (rocks, roots etc.) and steps.

One of Bradford's best-kept secrets, Goit Stock offers unique falls and watercourses that are up there with the best of the dales, even the Lakes!

Saltaire Living Advent Calendar Xmas Night Photo Walk

Location: Saltaire

Drink in the festive spirit and grab some original photo opportunities at the UNESCO heritage site Saltaire. 

This uniquely preserved spot is inspiring all year round, but at Christmas, it feels all the more special. Every day in December sees a new living advent calendar window open. There windows are carefully curated and on display around the surrounding homes and businesses.  

As well as taking a look at these temporary installations we’ll also looking at one or to of the classic views on offer and of course I’ll be sharing both my technical and creative experience to help you get the best photos from the walk. All cameras are welcome, though I would encourage a tripod to get the best results from the walk. 

Rombald’s Secret Moor @ Dawn - Shoot, edit, print

Location: The Studio, 95 Main st, Burley in Wharfedale LS29 7BU & Surrounding moors
Date: Sunday 15th December 2024, 7.30am - 2.30pm
Terrain: Rocky, uneven but well-formed paths with one or two short hills

Heading to a quieter, less traveled part of Ilkley Moor, we’ll take in some no-less spectacular views in time for sunrise. In the subsequent hour or so we’ll continue to explore some of the exciting compositions, views and wildlife to be enjoyed and some of my favourite secret spots of the moor.  

With breathtaking views over both the Wharfe and Aire valleys and comparatively easier terrain, there’ll be no shortage of opportunities to push your outdoor photography skills further. This time of year can be great for flocks of moorland birds like Golden Plover (we’ll be heading to a good spot for watching them too), Red Grouse, Snipe as well as a good population of brown hare. And there’s always the chance of some raptors like barn owl, kestrel, red kite and short-eared owl too.

During the photo walk, with a small group (3 max) I’ll be sharing my top photography and camera settings advice based around your own experience and equipment, ensuring you get some high-quality, creative photos suitable to make a subsequent fine art print. 

Following the morning’s shoot we’ll head to a local eatery, for some freshly prepared brunch, included in the ticket price. 

Having refuelled, we’ll head back to the studio to select, edit and print a favourite shots from the morning.

I've been watching and photographing owl near and far for many years now and every sighting still brings a rush of excitement. July can be a great time to spot owls, but with great opportunity comes great responsibility. With this private workshop I'll be sharing best approaches to responsibly watch and photograph one of our most iconic and enigmatic bird species.

Private Lessons (Full-Day): Autumn Photography Shoot-To-Print

The vibrant colours of Autumn are all the more precious for their fleeting nature.

Learn how to balance powerful composition techniques with appropriate camera settings for picture-perfect prints. With half the session focussed on practical photo techniques the second half will be spent looking at editing to get the best to of the photos and you'll go home with a professional A3 print.

Can I bring children?

From an early age, photography has played such a key role in my life. As part of my desire to champion photography to young people I offer free places for under 16s when accompanied by a paying adult

What if the weather forecast is bad?

You may be surprised just how many bad forecasts result in beautiful days - it happens a lot!

Walking Photography will always try and proceed with a planned photo walk. If extreme weather conditions or severe accessibility issues arise, then the walk date will rearranged for a convenient date. 

What if the weather is bad? 

It is surprisingly rare to have an event that is completely marred by the weather. With a deep to commitment to offering fun and enjoyable photo walks and workshops, if the event is judged to have been ruined by the weather participants will be given a 50% discount voucher off a future Photo Walk workshop up to the same value. 

Can I bring my camera phone or tablet?

Yes! We welcome camera phone and tablet walkers on most photo walks. There are some events like Get a Grip Course and the Night Photo Walks where you require manual functions on your camera. Such events are clearly noted in the descriptions.
