Join me for a relaxed and inspiring photo walk searching for stunning photos of butterflies and dragonflies catching the last drops of summer!
This walk is ideal for anyone with a camera — from curious beginners to keen photographers looking to hone their macro or telephoto skills. Exploring several habitats we’ll be on the lookout for dazzling dragonflies, damselflies, and painterly butterflies. As we explore, I’ll share techniques for getting close (without disturbing), working with light and movement, and composing powerful images of these fast-moving and beautiful insects.
The focus here is on field photography and nature appreciation — a chance to slow down, look closely, and build your confidence photographing insects in their natural environment.
Back at the studio we’ll also touch on basic editing tips you can try to bring out the best in your captures. After which you’ll get to print and take home your favourite photo on an A3 thick, archival cotton paper printed on a professional grade printer.
Last Flights of Summer: Golden Hour Photo Walk
Location: Leeds Area
Terrain: Uneven, rocky, muddy tracks
Distance: 1-2 miles (approx)
As the sun drops low and the light turns warm, join me for a guided photography walk through one of Yorkshire’s most atmospheric wetland landscapes. This golden hour session is designed to help you capture the quiet drama and rich textures of late summer wildlife — from fluttering wings to silent glides.
We’ll explore some of the overlooked areas in this iconic landscape searching for hidden natural gems as the butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies dance (or hunt) in the low light. As the air cools and the shadows lengthen, we’ll also keep a lookout for some of the wetlands’ more elusive stars — including marsh harriers sweeping the reeds, spoonbills and (if we’re lucky) owls emerging for their evening hunt.
This is a walk for photographers who enjoy both detail and drama, and who want to sharpen their eye in changing light conditions. I’ll be on hand to share tips on fieldcraft, composition, and adapting your settings for golden hour glow and low-light movement.
Expect a relaxed pace, beautiful scenes, and a chance to photograph nature at its most cinematic.
Autumnal Falls & Leaping Salmon in the Dales
Location: Nr Settle
Terrain: Rough, rocky, slippery and muddy tracks, with hills and slope
Distance: 3 miles (approx)
Each autumn, one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles unfolds in the Yorkshire Dales: the salmon run. Join me for a photography walk to Stainforth Force, where powerful fish hurl themselves upstream against the tumbling cascades of the River Ribble. It’s a true spectacle — and an incredible subject for the camera.
We’ll position ourselves at key vantage points along the falls to capture the action of leaping salmon, experimenting with different shutter speeds to freeze the moment or emphasise the rush of water. Alongside the salmon spectacle, we’ll also turn our lenses to the wider scene — the golden tones of autumn leaves, swirling water, and the rugged charm of the Dales in its seasonal glory.
This walk is perfect for anyone who enjoys combining wildlife and landscape photography. I’ll share practical tips on anticipating movement, managing key settings in changing light, and composing images that capture both the drama and atmosphere of the falls.
Expect a morning of fresh air, flowing water, and the chance to photograph one of Britain’s great natural events!
Fungi Macro, Shoot, Edit & Print Workshop
Location: Burley in Wharfedale & Surrounding Areas
Terrain: Fairly even, well pathed, some muddy patches and slopes
Distance: 1-2 miles (approx)
Step into the magical world of fungi photography this autumn, where we’ll slow down and explore the forest floor in search of weird and wonderful mushrooms, toadstools, and bracket fungi. From tiny pin-head forms to larger showstoppers, the woods are alive with hidden treasures waiting to be revealed through the lens.
We’ll begin with a relaxed photo walk, taking time to find and carefully compose our subjects. Alongside natural light photography, I’ll also bring along some (optional) creative props — including portable LED macro lights and even a mini smoke machine — to add atmosphere and a touch of magic to your shots. These subtle enhancements can help elevate fungi images into something truly special.
After a morning in the woods, we’ll return to my nearby studio to edit and prepare one of your favourite images for print. I’ll guide you through a simple, effective editing workflow before producing a gallery-quality A3 fine art print using professional printers, archival inks, and heavyweight cotton fibre paper.
You’ll head home with new skills in macro and creative nature photography, fresh inspiration for your woodland walks, and a finished fine art print — a unique reminder of the forest’s autumn secrets.
