Secret Lesson Inspiration: Owls in the wild, Moorland Scapes
Whitby: Street x Wildlife Photography Photo Walk
Location: Whitby
Terrain: Steep slopes and hills, uneven and muddy ground, 5 miles (approx)
Whitby has something to offer every kind of photographer and never fails to inspire! For this special, one-off Photo Walk I want to share some of the iconic and some of the hidden corners of this famous location, while highlighting some of the exciting photo opportunities on offer when we look beyond our typical scope and tropes with a camera. I’ll also share several ideas from this location that led to shortlisted photos in prestigious awards.
(Wild) Birds in the Heather: Shoot, Edit, Print Workshop
Location: Ilkley
Terrain: Rough, rocky, Muddy trucks
Distance: 3 miles (approx)
Join me for an inspiring photography workshop on the wild and windswept Ilkley Moor, where we’ll explore one of Yorkshire’s most iconic upland landscapes in search of its common and not so common wild inhabitants.
Whether you're picking up a camera for the first time or you're a seasoned photographer, this session is designed to help you capture compelling images of wild birds including red grouse, stonechats, wheatear, skylarks, meadow pipits, birds of prey and more.
Alongside expert fieldcraft and bird photography techniques, I’ll also share tips for making the most of the ever-changing light and moorland backdrops — In addition there’s always a chance of spotting a curious Swaledale sheep or two among the heather!
After a rewarding few hours out in the field, we’ll return to my studio in nearby Burley in Wharfedale to edit and print your favourite image from the day. You’ll learn how to prepare your shot for print, and then produce a gallery-quality fine art print using a professional printer, archival inks, and heavyweight cotton fibre paper. You’ll leave not only with new skills and ideas for your photography, but also with a finished piece of art — a lasting memory of your time on the moor.
The Secret Moor
Location: Askwith
Terrain: Rough, rocky, Muddy trucks
Distance: 3 miles (approx)
Explore the magic of the golden hours on a guided photo walk through one of Yorkshire’s lesser-known moorland gems. Away from the crowds, this secret spot offers dramatic light, unique vistas, and sweeping landscapes that come alive in the early evening light. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced photographer, I’ll share simple but effective techniques for making the most of the changing light and capturing atmospheric shots that stand out.
As we wander the heather-clad hills and quiet trails, we’ll focus on composition, exposure, and creative ways to photograph the moor’s raw beauty. This relaxed, small-group walk is perfect for anyone looking to slow down, see differently, and come away with images that feel personal and powerful.
Last Flights of Summer: A Shoot, Edit Print Workshop with Butterflies & Dragonflies
Location: Various (Ilkley area)
Terrain: Rough, rocky, Muddy trucks
Distance: 3 miles (approx)
Join me for a relaxed and inspiring photo walk searching for stunning photos of butterflies and dragonflies catching the last drops of summer!
This walk is ideal for anyone with a camera — from curious beginners to keen photographers looking to hone their macro or telephoto skills. Exploring several habitats we’ll be on the lookout for dazzling dragonflies, damselflies, and painterly butterflies. As we explore, I’ll share techniques for getting close (without disturbing), working with light and movement, and composing powerful images of these fast-moving and beautiful insects.
The focus here is on field photography and nature appreciation — a chance to slow down, look closely, and build your confidence photographing insects in their natural environment.
Back at the studio we’ll also touch on basic editing tips you can try to bring out the best in your captures. After which you’ll get to print and take home your favourite photo on an A3 thick, archival cotton paper printed on a professional grade printer.
Last Flights of Summer: Golden Hour Photo Walk
Location: Leeds Area
Terrain: Uneven, rocky, muddy tracks
Distance: 1-2 miles (approx)
As the sun drops low and the light turns warm, join me for a guided photography walk through one of Yorkshire’s most atmospheric wetland landscapes. This golden hour session is designed to help you capture the quiet drama and rich textures of late summer wildlife — from fluttering wings to silent glides.
We’ll explore some of the overlooked areas in this iconic landscape searching for hidden natural gems as the butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies dance (or hunt) in the low light. As the air cools and the shadows lengthen, we’ll also keep a lookout for some of the wetlands’ more elusive stars — including marsh harriers sweeping the reeds, spoonbills and (if we’re lucky) owls emerging for their evening hunt.
This is a walk for photographers who enjoy both detail and drama, and who want to sharpen their eye in changing light conditions. I’ll be on hand to share tips on fieldcraft, composition, and adapting your settings for golden hour glow and low-light movement.
Expect a relaxed pace, beautiful scenes, and a chance to photograph nature at its most cinematic.
