Travel, Street & Nature Photography at Whitby

There is nowhere on earth that is anywhere like Whitby. It’s unique and whatever you like to photograph you’ll find inspiration around every corner of this special place. It’s the perfect place to learn and hone new photography skills.

This special photo walk begins as the sun rises over Whitby Harbour and Whitby Abbey. From there we’ll explore the beaches, scenery and wildlife. Yorkshire’s east coast never fails to inspire. From nesting fulmar to the restless turnstones there’s some great wildlife scenes to capture. As well as nature, Whitby’s landscape is steeped in history, myth and legend.  Working our way into the town we’ll explore the historic streets and scenes of this iconic coastal town. The walk finishes in the centre after around two and a half hours, leaving you the rest of the day to practice your photography further around Whitby and/or further afield.

Scenery

Whitby offers an exciting array of scenery to enjoy and photograph. The dominant feature is the Abbey ruins that overlook the town. Beneath lies the lifeblood of the town, the harbour. Bringing both fish and tourists the harbour offers a mix of the old and the new. Old lobster pots, ropes and nets make great features as do the eclectic mix of boats and ships moored to the harbour walls. Away from the harbour the sandy beaches, beach huts and dog walkers also make for some great scenic shots. The gothic streets and shop windows at Whitby are unlike anywhere else and are well worth exploring too.

Wildlife

There is a great mix of exciting wildlife at Whitby. The most charismatic of which has to be the turnstone. This small but stunning birds scurry around the piers and harbours looking for food they make brilliant subjects for your camera. Equall, if not more stunning is the Fulmar who will be beginning to nest on the local cliffs. Fulmar are a relative of the albatross and as fascinating as they are gorgeous. Watch these stunning perform the effortless, mesmerising flights you’d typically have to travel to the Southern Hemisphere to enjoy!
